JHDC Satellite Programs

In addition to our primary Dance Center in Edgewater — JHDC offers a number of satellite programs throughout the City of Chicago.

Agassiz Elementary School — 2851 North Seminary, Chicago, IL. 60657
This audition-based dance program admits 45 students who are then divided into beginner and advanced-beginner levels.  Students work diligently in structured dance lessons weekly, learning fundamentals, etiquette and a choreographed dance.  The last 15 weeks of the program focus on choreography that participants perform throughout the year at school events as well as at the Winter & Spring JHDC Recitals.

JHDC provides an instructor to teach dance etiquette, fundamentals of Hip-Hop, and choreography during the Fall/Winter and Winter/Spring terms.  Youth perform at the JHDC Winter recital and the JHDC Spring show events.

Reva & David Logan Center for the Arts, at the Univ. of Chicago — 915 E 60th St, Chicago, IL 60637
This class is designed to condition the body for dance. It offers a kinesthetic workout that hones in on specific muscle groups, providing the strength, flexibility, and technique required by Joel Hall’s particular style of jazz dance.  Geared toward beginners, students of all ages grow at their own pace.

Walter Payton College Prep — 1034 North Wells, Chicago, IL. 60610
This beginner-level dance class infuses hip-hop, jazz, and ballet techniques, providing a broad exposure for students as part of the school enrichment program.  Each semester, participants learn a routine that they will perform at a school assembly for classmates and family. Participants also get the opportunity to experience what it’s like to perform as a professional by dancing at a Joel Hall event!

Washington Park — 5531 South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive  Chicago, IL 60637
This partnership between the Chicago Park District and The Joel Hall Dancers & Center focuses on youth and adults, with performance-based classes.

  • The Fierce Ballet Class on Tuesdays is a wonderful slower-paced class.  The class starts slow and progresses to a faster pace, while working on repetitive barre work as well as strength building.  This class leads up to learning a choreographed piece for the JHDC’s Spring Concert.
  • This Beginning Ballet Class on Saturdays is a 30 minute dance class where students learn the basics of ballet technique, as well as different jumps & turns.  Students will focus on teamwork, taking turns, sharing and stage presence.
  • The Beginning Tap Class on Saturdays is a 30 minute dance class.  This focuses on learning basic tap steps, vocabulary, understanding the connection between tap dance and music, and learning simple exercises.
