With wins in both nominated Dance categories at the 15th Annual “Black Excellence Awards” — Joel Hall’s production of “Anja: The Unexpected” was hailed as an artistic and creative triumph by the African American Arts Alliance of Chicago.
Joel Hall took home top honors as “Best Choreographer” — and the entire “Anja” ensemble cast was saluted for”Outstanding Achievement in Dance — Overall Performance.”
The annual Black Excellence Awards were established to honor outstanding works produced in African American Theatre, Dance, Music, Film, Literature and Visual Arts. In 2014, Joel Hall was lauded with the African American Arts Alliance’s distinguished “Lifetime Achievement Award.”
The star-studded gathering, held at the DuSable Museum, was also punctuated by wins for Congo Square Theatre’s “Twisted Melodies” — a production in which Joel Hall also participated as choreographer, and which featured the artistry of JHD dancers Carl Jeffries, Michelle Reid and Jackie Sanders. “Twisted Melodies” won in the categories for “Best Actor” (Kevin Roston Jr.), “Best Director” (Samuel Roberson) and “Best Theater Production.”
Congrats to all involved in “Anja” and “Twisted Melodies’!
